DESCRIPTION
See firsthand the transformation of the historic West Harwich Schoolhouse, built in 1871, as it is repurposed into multi-family housing through public-private funding. Led by developer John Carey, the project preserves the historic character of the original schoolhouse with both market-rate and affordable units. Visitors will tour up to three of the units and will learn about the schoolhouse’s role in town history, the community’s vision for adaptive reuse, and the creative funding mechanisms—including support from the Harwich Affordable Housing Trust and long-term deed restrictions, that make this blend of historic preservation and housing affordability possible.
