11:45 A.M. | A Strong Foundation: Community Land Trusts and Land Banks for Housing

One of the key regional recommendations of the Regional Housing Strategy is establishing a housing land bank and a community land trust to facilitate swifter acquisition, management, development and redevelopment of properties to advance attainable and affordable housing. This session will include a brief overview of what community land trusts and land banks for housing are, a summary and update of ongoing work to potentially establish these entities on Cape Cod, and examples of these entities and their successes from elsewhere in the Commonwealth.

11:45 A.M. | Resilient, Inclusive, and Diverse: Supporting Cape Cod’s Year-Round Economy

The 2024 Cape Cod Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) identifies an economic vision that supports a resilient, inclusive, and diverse year-round community with access to housing options, high quality business, education and employment opportunities, and thriving natural resources, building upon the historic and unique characteristics that have drawn people to Cape Cod for centuries. It highlights strengths and opportunities, as well as an action plan, to promote a thriving economy into the future, building on impactful programs and initiatives already underway. Participants will discuss ongoing targeted efforts and how they contribute to the broader Cape Cod economy.

11:45 A.M. | Sparking Change: Promoting Community Access to Electric Vehicle Infrastructure

The transportation sector accounts for more than 55% of the region’s greenhouse gas emissions. Transitioning to electric vehicles is an important step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions; however, significant infrastructure investments are necessary for success. This session will provide an overview of Cape Cod’s current electric vehicle infrastructure and highlight initiatives to increase equitable community access to this infrastructure in the years to come.

1:45 P.M. | Road to Zero: Planning for Safer Roadways Across Cape Cod

Improving road safety and addressing traffic fatalities is a nation-wide priority. Development of the Cape Cod Vision Zero Action Plan is an initiative designed to identify solutions to tackle the root causes of all crashes, emphasizing those involving bicyclists, pedestrians, and other non-motorists. This session will provide an overview of relevant regional safety projects, highlight peer communities who have engaged in related work across the state, and include local projects that align with Vision Zero planning and implementation.

1:45 P.M. | Streamlining Context-Sensitive Design: Pre-approved Housing Plans

Streamlining permitting of housing development and redevelopment in appropriate areas is a key regional recommendation of the Regional Housing Strategy. There are many different tools to help streamline what can be complex and lengthy permitting processes. One strategy gaining momentum throughout the country is pre-approved plans for housing. These plans go through the permitting process upfront, are designed in context-sensitive ways to ensure they contribute to the architectural character of a neighborhood, and provide greater predictability for housing development and redevelopment projects for both the developers and the community. Participants in this session will provide an overview of pre-approved plan programs and their successes.

Accurately and thoroughly telling the story of our past helps us to better plan for an equitable future. This session will continue the conversation on underrepresented histories from OneCape 2023, highlight efforts underway to document underrepresented histories on Cape Cod, and share examples of this work from across the Commonwealth and beyond.
